Bubba D. Licious began her drag personality
as a member of The Armorettes: "The Infamous Camp
Drag Queens of the South!" from June 1989 through
June 2000
After 11 years as an Armorette, Bubba retired from the
cast on Pride Sunday 2000.
Bubba continues to perform at special events and fund
raisers as requested.
Bubba currently hosts a weekly cabaret show at Nickiemoto's
Japanese Restaurant; and Bubba is the monthly host for
PALS Bingo which is the second Thursday of
each month.
Personal Biography of Bubba
D. Licious
Bubba D. Licious was born in June 1989 thru her alter-ego,
Jim Marks. Jim had moved to Atlanta earlier that same
year after a childhood in Savannah, GA and then earning
his undergraduate degree from a small private college
in South Carolina.
As a member of The Armory softball team that summer, Bubba
audtioned for the cast of the Armorettes, "The Camp
Drag Queens of the South". Bubba was selected to
the cast that began in performing their camoy conedy in
1978. Bubba D. Licious quickly became a favorite in the
cast and was the weekly emcess until retirement from the
Armorettes in June 2000.
In Jim's professional career in Atlanta, he held several
positions during five years with The Grady Health System before
joining AID Atlanta as the Deputy Director and Chief Financial
Officer. With AID Atlanta for over four years, he was
one of several key people who helped guide and build AID
Atlanta to national recognition with its growth and development
as the largest AID service organization
in the Southeast.
In April 2001, The NAMES Project Foundation, caretakers
of The AIDS Memorial Quilt, moved its national headquarters
from San Francisco to Atlanta - (www.aidsquilt.org). Jim
joined the staff in August and is now the CFO and Director
of Operations.
The Quilt continues to grow as new panels are received
almost every day. There are now almost 50,000 panels representing
90,000 lives lost to AIDS. The Quilt continues to promote
healing, heighten awareness, and inspire action in the
struggle against HIV and AIDS.
In addition to his professional work with The Grady Infectious
Disease Program, AID Atlanta, and The Quilt, Jim and his
alter-ego, Bubba D. Licious, have devoted countless hours
and energy in service to the local community and national
events.
Jim has served on the Board of Directors of AIDS Treatment
Initiatives, Haven House Foundation, the Armory's Homecoming,
Hotlanta River Expo, Hotlanta Softball League, and Atlanta
Games. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Pets Are Loving Support (www.palsatlanta.org) and Beauty
AID (www.beautyaid.org).
This year marks Jim's 15th year as a participant in Hotlanta
Softball League. He served as Commissioner for 3 years
during a period when the league grew from 6 teams to over
25. He also served as Assistant and Commissioner of the
North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance for 7 years.
NAGAAA (www.NAGAAA.org)
is the international governing body of gay and lesbian
softball.
Jim is a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church. He
also served on the Mayor Campbell's Senior Advisory Board
and was one of six Atlantan's who testified at Major League
Baseball's hearings against former Atlanta Brave John
Rocker for his
racist and anti-gay remarks in an interview in 1999.
Jim Marks and Bubba D. Licious have received several awards
and recognition for his community service including the
2001 HRC Dan Bradley Humanitarian of the Year Award, the
Atlanta Pride Community Builder Award - 1998, the City
of Atlanta's Phoenix Award, Grand Marshal of 2003 Atlanta
Pride Parade, and Hotlanta Softball League's Commissioners
Cup - 1996.
Sporting a curly blonde wig, close-out dresses and campy
make-up, the quiet Jim Marks becomes the quick witted
& comical Bubba D. Licious. Bubba began on a dare
in 1989 and has evolved into the "Queen of Camp"
and Atlanta's hostess extraordinaire. She has performed
nationally and internationally in more than 50 cities
and has performed and hosted more than 2,100 pageants,
shows and special events in 14 years of entertaining.
The combined volunteer and fund raising efforts of Jim
and Bubba D. Licious have assisted in raising more than
$3.5 million for the local and national organizations
and events within our GLBT community.
Bubba D. Licious currently appears every Sunday at the
Red Chair Revue - 9:00pm, every Monday at Nickiemoto's
Drag-a-Maki - 8:45pm a dinner cabaret show, Bingo with
Bubba every Friday at Blake's on the Park - 6:45pm, and
is the monthly hostess for PALS Bingo the 2nd Thursday
each month at 7:30pm - see www.Palsatlanta.org.
